For the Love of Buffy...

For a long time, we thought she had died of Worms...

Last june we had a little Crested Campbell duckling that we got from a hatchery (we didn't order her, but the hatchery gave her to us because they were sold out of any extra Mollys). I named her Buffy because of that cute little crest. She grew to about 2 1/2 weeks old, the took ill and died quite mysteriously...

But last night, while thinking about my favourite subject (poultry), it finally occured to me what really happened...

This is were I divide this post...

(with Genetic lingo)
There is a heterozygous gene at the Cr+/ locus that is Lethal. Ducks that inherit the gene en heterozygous will be fine, but ducks that inherit the gene en homozygous (Like Buffy) die after a little while...

Okay, that was a joke. Basically, Buffy died because she carried the crest gene in a double dose... which is deadly. RIP Buffy.
